President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday, paid a unexpected visit to the Police College, Ikeja, in what is assumed to be a response to the Channels TV Documentary, and in the process, took the authorities of the foremost training institution by surprise.
Jonathan, who was accompanied by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2, Mr. Mamaah Tsafe; the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Umar Manko and other military and air force officers, arrived at the college premises at about 3 pm as reported, and immediately proceeded on an inspection of the hostels, college kitchen, dining hall and the Officers’ Mess.
The college authorities were caught off guard, as the commandant of the college, CP I.F. Yerima, was on able to give account to Mr. President how and when Channels TV filmed the documentary showing the state of rot in the college.
In an attempt to save himself from the glaring embarrassment, Yerima turned to his deputy and other senior officers of the college for cover up but were all stun to silence and none could help out.
Angered by the documentary that exposed the rot in the college, Jonathan declared that it was a smear campaign by the TV station.
He said, “This is a calculated attempt to damage the image of this government. The Police College, Ikeja is not the only training institution in Nigeria.”
