When an even begins to advertise itself eight clear months to D-Day and dares anyone to compete with it for attention on that day, there is no doubt that the organizers have positioned itself for objective scrutiny. This is exactly what the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) has done when broadcast of its coming COSON Week between May 19 and 25 was broadcast in the last quarter of 2012.
A recent news conference at The Protea Hotel, Isaac John Street, Ikeja-Lagos reinforced the resolve of the COSON and spelt out the finer details of the proposed week.
Announcing the plans, the leadership of the musicians collecting body described it as seven days of non-stop fun and enjoyment.
Everyday of the week will witness a different activity, culminating in an awards ceremony. “We have been painstaking in designing each of the seven big events taking place every day during the COSON Week to make sure that there is something exciting for every segment of the society. From the deeply religious to the high octane intellectuals; from those who like sleek, exclusive and champagne entertainment to those who thrive on highly explosive no holds-bared throw downs and from the ivory tower to the man on the street, we have planned something for everyone. Get ready Lagos, no one will be excluded. Whether you are an old school conservative or young, liberal and restless, we have packaged something to make it a week of unforgettable fun.”
Attended by a good number of entertainers, would be sponsors and collaborators, the news conference sought to provide a foretaste of the coming COSON Week of spectacles. Representatives of Nigeria Breweries Plc, MTN and a couple of banks were present to witness the presentation. Also in attendance was the Chairman of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Association whose body is expected to activate one of the key activities of the week; a table tennis contest open to entertainers and entertainment journalists.
This show of support authenticated the COSON leadership statement that ‘We are mobilizing the massive COSON family, indeed the entire music industry, our brothers and sisters from Nollywood, and our fantastic comedy community. We are reaching out strongly to the business community and are setting up the kind of extensive media superstructure, the kind of which has never been attempted in these parts. We are mobilizing the entire people of Lagos and making sure that everyone anywhere in the world can see this positive side of the Nigerian nation. We are declaring Lagos the undisputed entertainment capital of the continent and that has extensive social and economic ramifications’
Audience members at the news conference were riveted by an audio-visual presentation outlining the events of the COSON which was voiced by hip-hop artiste, Michael Stephens, better known as Ruggedman. Another activity of the COSON Week which elicited a lot of excitement is the community service day in which popular Nigerian artistes will take to the streets of Lagos, driving garbage trucks, clearing the drainage, sweeping the streets and painting public school buildings. Some of the artistes who attended the news conference like Weird MC, Ras Kimono, Chidinma, Waje, Nomoreloss and artistes manager and music label owner, Efe Omorogbe were thrilled at the positive image that this will generate for the industry and the spin-off effect on the country’s image. For the community service day, Lagos has been split into three zones including, the island, Festac and Ikaja. This particular activity requires a lot of support from agencies of the Lagos State government and consultation has begun as exemplified with the presence of the Chairman of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association.
An important part of the events of the much advertised COSON Week 2013 is the publication of the Nigerian Music Machine, a 300-hundred page full gloss magazine tracking the highpoints of key aspects of the effervescent Nigerian music industry, the people, institutions and brands driving the industry. Thousands will get to read the magazine during the COSON Week and long after.
According to Ruggedman, ‘The Nigerian Music Machine will be food for the eyes, a collectors’ item that will be read and read for many years. Every article is being written by a writer who knows his onions. The Nigerian Music Machine will provide records, information and entertainment not available anywhere else. It will be the authoritative reference material on the industry’.
Every advert in the Nigerian Music Machine will be at least full page and full colour gloss. A full version of the Nigeria Music Machine with all the adverts will be published on the Internet.
